U.S. Government History Timeline

What was the first government in the world?

It is difficult to determine with certainty which was the first government in the world, as governance has existed in various forms in different societies and cultures throughout human history.

However, some of the earliest known examples of formal government systems include the ancient city-states of Sumer in Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq), which developed around 4000 BCE. These city-states had complex bureaucracies and legal codes, and were governed by kings who were believed to have been appointed by the gods.

Similarly, the ancient civilization of Egypt, which emerged around 3100 BCE, had a highly centralized government ruled by pharaohs who were seen as divine figures with absolute power.

Other early examples of government include the Indus Valley civilization in the Indian subcontinent, which emerged around 2500 BCE and had a system of centralized government, and the Xia dynasty in China, which is believed to have been established around 2100 BCE. It is worth noting that the forms of government and governance structures have evolved significantly over time, and continue to do so today.
